O'Grady's parents are Jim O'Grady who is a financial advisor and Jan O'Grady. Her family lived in Wheaton and attended Wheaton North School, graduating in 1981. The model was featured in several commercials prior to moving into Los Angeles in 1986. O'Grady began her career modelling in Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She played a role in the 1988 romantic comedic film called She's Having a Baby. She then played a recurring part in ABC comedy China Beach with Dana Delany.
